Stress Urinary Incontinence is involuntary urine leakage on exertion such as coughing, laughing, sneezing, or even exercise. So what causes this? It’s the weakening of the pelvic floor muscles caused by childbirth, which means young women can develop this problem too. Constipation, menopause, and hormonal changes can also have an impact on the effectiveness of your pelvic floor muscles.

3 million women in the UK are regularly incontinent, over half of those are suffering from stress urinary incontinence. I know not everyone is as comfortable as me. We really need to break the taboo and start normalising these issues.

I HAD A C-SECTION, IT CAN’T HAPPEN TO ME. CAN IT?

Most women think this only happens to women who have had a vaginal birth, however, you can have a C-Section and still have the same issue.

After having my first baby, it wasn’t so bad. I managed to gain that control again as I was doing some exercises. I’ll be honest, when I was pregnant with my second baby, I didn’t do my pelvic floor muscle exercises as much as I should have.

As I’m getting older I’ve noticed it’s getting worse. I’m at a place where my pelvic floor is so weak I can barely do my exercises as I feel like I can’t feel them so trying to do my exercises is so difficult.

WHAT CAN I DO?

Firstly don’t be afraid to speak to your friends, family or even your GP. I guarantee someone will be in your position and your GP is there to help you through any issues you may have. They will be keen to listen to your issues and will of course arrange any examinations you may need to find any other causes of your leakage problems.

Once you have established that it is your pelvic floor muscles there are some really easy ways you can help yourself at home.

GET EXERCISING THAT PELVIC FLOOR

It’s never too late to start exercising your pelvic floor and if you do them every day you will start to notice them strengthen, as they get stronger your leakage will lessen and over time stop. That doesn’t mean you should stop doing your exercises though.

They can be done absolutely anywhere, so there are no excuses. If like me they are really weak start really small and work your way up. It’s really important to exercise them every day otherwise they will become weakened or damaged. You will find lots of information over on the NHS site, there are apps for your phone and even videos on YouTube.

Wear a Contrelle Activgard

If you want that extra protection while you’re exercising and strengthening your pelvic floor muscles try using *Contrelle Activgard, this will help you stay dry and fresh all day especially if you love high-impact exercise. Contrelle has been re-released in the UK and can be used alongside pelvic floor exercises. Who wants to be wearing a pad/pants all the time? I don’t feel attractive wearing them all the time.

I have to say this nifty little gadget works by lifting the bladder neck and urethra with a soft foam parachute-looking guy, you insert into your vagina. It can be worn for up to 16 hours and is really comfortable and easy to use.

Start with the sizing kit to find the right size and fit for you. They’re not cheap once you have found the right size and fit for yourself. You can get a pack of 5 for £18.75 or a pack of 30 for £90. You just have to keep reminding yourself that this is not a long-term solution. If they help to give you a leak-free day and take that weight off then it is so worth it.

What Do You Get In The Kit?

You get one of each size and an applicator along with the information and instruction leaflet.

They are so easy to use and I can honestly say I haven’t felt this confident in a while and I was able to sneeze without feeling the need to cross my legs as there were no leaks.
